A Simple clock and display shelf, great for beginners to appreciate building something to be proud of while keeping the cuts simple.

Directions

Follow the steps below to complete this project.

Pocket holes

Take the top, middle, and bottom 12" 1x4 and put 2 pocket holes in each side.

Frame construction

Take the top (pocket holes facing down) and secure it to one of the sides using wood glue and pocket holes. With the top attached to the one side, measure 12" from the top down the side and make a pencil mark. Take the middle 12" board (pocket holes facing up), lining up the bottom edge of the board with the pencil mark and secure flush with glue and pocket holes. Take the 12" bottom board (pocket holes facing down) and flush with the bottom side. Finally, take the remaining side and secure it to the top middle and bottom using glue and pocket hole screws).

Clock front poplar

Take the poplar pieces and form a square on the top, 12" pieces on the top and bottom, 9" pieces on the sides. Use brad nails to secure the poplar into the square form.

Clock board

Take the clock board, and slide it in from the back and push flush against the poplar front. take the back blocks, while keeping the clock board flush against the front, secure the clock board with the clock blocks and brad nails.

Clock setup

from the front, measure the center point of the clock front and drill a hole using manufacturer's recommendations. Install the clock mechanism. Using a 3/4 paddle bit, make holes in the 3, 6, 9, and 12 positions of the clock. Next, take a 1/4 drill bit and make holes in the 2,4,6,8, and 10 positions of the clock. Next, take a 1/8 drill bit and make holes in the 1,5,7,and 11 positions of the clock. Finally, add the clock hands and assure proper movement.

Display backing

Position the display backing in the remaining open area on the back and secure with brad nails.

Finishing

Sanding all outside and shelf with 220 grit sandpaper and finish with whatever stain or finish of your choosing.

(1) 1x2, 48", Poplar  
(1) 1/4" Thick, Half Sheet, back board  

Hardware/Supplies:

(12) 1 1/4 Kreg screws  
(24) 1" brad nails  
(1) clock hardware kit without numbers  

Parts/Cut List:

(2) sides, 3/4"x4"x24"  
(3) Top, middle, and bottom, 3/4"x4"x12"  
(1) clock board, 1/4"x10 1/2"x12"  
(1) display back, 1/4"x12 1/2"x12 1/2"  
(2) clock poplar sides, 3/4"x1"x9"  
(2) clock poplar top and bottom, 3/4"x1"x12"  
(4) Clock back blocks (poplar), 3/4"x1"x2"
