Directions

  • The Frame

Cut the boards to size and start with assembling the frame of the bookcase. For this project, I am using 1x8 boards but this can easily be done by cutting a sheet of plywood to size.
Using a speed square and a right angle pocket hole clamp screw each board (using a 1 1/4in screw) together to form the frame of the bookcase. It's important that the frame is square.

  • Top Shelf

Assemble before attaching the shelves before inserting and attaching it to the frame of the bookcase. Using 1 1/4in. screws attach the 7" board to the end of the 18 1/8" (top shelf) board. At the bottom attach the other 7" board 11" in from the side of the bookcase.

  • Bottom shelf

Now attach the bottom self to the actual frame of the bookcase. This should be about 7" from the bottom of the bookshelf.

  • Assemble Bookshelf

Working your way from the bottom, attach the middle and top shelves.

  • Optional Bookcase Backing

You can add a back to the bookcase by attaching a 1/4" or 1/2" sheet of plywood to the back. This should be cut down to 37"x32".

Or you can add fabric to the back of the bookcase using thumbtacks. The fabric allows you to change the look at any time based on your mood, the season, or room.

  • Hardware

Screw on the French Cleat Picture Hanger to the back of the bookcase. This french cleat can support up to 200lbs. You can purchase one from a store or make one to attach to the back of the bookshelf.

  • Middle Shelf

Assemble middle shelf using pocket screws by attaching the 7" board to the end of the middle shelf (23 1/8" board).
